چکیده

New and emerging policies that aim to set standards for protection and sustainable use of soil 10 are likely to require identification of geographical risk/ priority areas. Soil degradation can be 11 seen as the change or disturbance in soil quality and it is therefore crucial that soil and soil 12 quality are well understood to protect soils and to meet legislative requirements. To increase 13 this understanding a review of the soil quality definition evaluated its development, with a formal 14 scientific approach to assessment beginning in the 1970’s, followed by a period of discussion 15 and refinement. A number of reservations about soil quality assessment expressed in the 16 literature are summarised. Taking concerns into account, a definition of soil quality incorporating 17 soil’s ability to meet multifunctional requirements, to provide ecosystem services, and the 18 potential for soils to affect other environmental media is described. Assessment using this 19 definition requires a large number of soil function dependent indicators that can be expensive, 20 laborious, prone to error, and problematic in comparison. Findings demonstrate the need for a 21 method that is not function dependent, but uses a number of cross functional indicators instead. 22 This method to systematically prioritise areas where detailed investigation is required, using a 23 ranking based against a desired level of action, could be relatively quick, easy and cost 24 effective. As such this has potential to fill in gaps and compliment existing monitoring programs 25 and assist in development and implementation of current and future soil protection legislation. 26

THESIS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Assessing Soil Functions for Sustainable Remediation of Contaminated Sites

Soil contamination is a worldwide problem. Soil remediation is often carried out to reduce the risks posed by contaminants in the soil to human health and environment. Contaminant concentration is typically the only soil quality aspect maintained in remediation projects. However, emerging regulatory requirements on soil protection has introduced the soil function concept and demand that other c...

Using soil function evaluation in multi-criteria decision analysis for sustainability appraisal of remediation alternatives.

Soil contamination is one of the major threats constraining proper functioning of the soil and thus provision of ecosystem services. Remedial actions typically only address the chemical soil quality by reducing total contaminant concentrations to acceptable levels guided by land use. However, emerging regulatory requirements on soil protection demand a holistic view on soil assessment in remedi...

ارزیابی کیفیت خاک در منطقه غرب شهر تهران با استفاده از روش مجموعه حداقل داده

The soil pollution especially in urban soils is projected to increase drastically and its effects on chemical cycles are yet to be known. Approaches to measure air and water quality are well established, but urban soil quality assessment has received little attention. Soil quality assessment can help as a way to better understand the pollution increase outcomes in urban environments and to esta...

Soil quality improvement under an ecologically based farming system in northwest Missouri

Ecologically based farming conserves and improves the soil resource and protects environmental quality by using organic or natural resources without the application of synthetic chemicals. Soil quality assessment indicates the ability of management systems to optimize soil productivity and to maintain its structural and biological integrity. Our objective was to evaluate the effect of ecologica...

Coliforms Contamination and Hygienic Status of Milk Chain in Emerging Economies

Emerging economies have often poor hygiene practices in traditional milk and dairy production all over the world. Therefore, pathogenic bacteria in milk pose major public health concerns especially for those communities who still consume raw milk. Escherichia coli and coliforms are often used as indicator microorganisms, so their presence in food implies poor hygiene and sanitary practices. The...
